The Artist

Hello and welcome to my site. My name is Rosalind (Rosa) Wharton and I am a mixed media textile artist currently residing in Ontario, Canada. Originally from the island paradise of Barbados, I moved to Canada in 2017 to pursue my passion and obtain my degree in textile design.
When I’m not making, I’m either riding a horse, listening to soca, dancing, learning another language or taking long walks in the forest with my mum.

The Art

As a mixed media textile artist, my work speaks to the vision that there is unity in diversity. My art is characterized by the combination of various techniques united by vibrant colours and expressive textures. By fusing traditional handwork with contemporary digital technologies, I create fresh and current designs that preserve and respect the essence of each cultural technique used. My craft also provides an opportunity to educate and generate awareness within people about various social and environmental issues in an upbuilding and reflective way.

As a person raised in the Caribbean, the sea and the aquatic life within it has always been a pleasant and important part of my life on an island. It is no surprise therefore that my designs are often inspired by these precious ecosystems either through colour, texture or form.

Because of my background in environmental science, the process is as important as the finished project. Sustainable practices and high-quality, natural materials ensure that each object I create has minimal impact on the environment.  My process is also very systematic, involving extensive testing and sampling towards innovative designs and products.

From textile manufacturing and fabric manipulation to surface design and embellishment, I employ various skills and techniques in my artwork. From felting and weaving to smocking and printing, I continue to learn and challenge myself to further develop my discipline.
